Night-by-Night Recap of the Opening Round

Tuesday: Mbappé, Haaland and a Villa thriller

The headline tie of the opening night went the way of Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappé struck on 14 minutes and Federico Valverde doubled the lead nine minutes later, before Inter pulled one back. Thibaut Courtois, making his 100th Champions League appearance, kept the Italians at bay with a string of saves to secure a 2-1 win at the Bernabéu.

In Portugal, Erling Haaland did what Erling Haaland does. His brace gave Manchester City a controlled 2-0 win at Porto and took him to 59 goals in 59 Champions League games.

Aston Villa edged a five-goal contest in Belgium. John McGinn and Emi Buendía put the visitors ahead early, Nicolas Jackson scored his first Villa goal before the break, and Club Brugge’s second-half penalty only set up a nervy finish in a 3-2 away win.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund beat Villarreal 3-2 in a match where all five goals arrived after half-time, with Serhou Guirassy scoring twice. Wednesday: PSG and Barcelona run riot

The defending champions began their title defence in emphatic style. Paris Saint-Germain were five goals up against Slovan Bratislava before the hour mark, with new signing Ferran Torres completing a hat-trick and Ousmane Dembélé adding two in a 6-1 rout.

Manchester United’s return to Europe’s top table could hardly have gone better.
